Workshop description:
The workshop “Pelvic Control in Gait Training for Patients with Ataxia” is designed to enhance understanding and application of practical exercises that promote body stability and safety during ambulation. Ataxia, as a neurological disorder of motor coordination, often causes gait insecurity and instability, where pelvic position and movement control play a particularly important role.
During the workshop, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of normal pelvic biomechanics in gait and its role in maintaining balance and step rhythm. Special emphasis will be placed on analyzing difficulties commonly encountered in patients with ataxia—such as abnormal pelvic shifts, loss of symmetry, and insecure weight transfer. Through demonstrations and practical exercises, participants will learn facilitation strategies for proper gait patterns, the use of tactile and verbal cues, as well as specific exercises for trunk strengthening and pelvic stabilization.
The workshop will also include practical examples of task adaptation to individual patient abilities, with the aim of increasing independence and safety in daily activities. A dedicated part of the program will focus on the therapist’s role in motivating and empowering patients, thereby improving quality of life and reducing the risk of falls.
This educational program is intended for physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other rehabilitation professionals, combining theoretical knowledge and practical skills for direct application in clinical practice.
